THE HOLABIRD ADVOCATE STARTS COUNTING
SO YOU CAN COUNT ON US TO GROW
In the seven months since restarting The Holabird Advocate, there has never been a Circulation Department. That is until now. We at The Holabird Advocate had now way of knowing how many of you wonderful readers were out there, how often you read the paper and who reads it the most. Now thanks to the folks at Bravenet.com, we can track you're reading habit's to see how to serve you better. You the reader can even see how we're doing by looking at the top left hand corner of your screen. Our goal is to have more than 38 readers by years end. As you may know, 38 is the current population of Holabird and the greater Holabird metropolitan area. We hope we can "count on you" to keep on enjoying The Holabird Advocate just as you have before. Bravenet.com was discovered by Jerry Hinkle our courageous, dynamic, Publisher when he noticed that Stephanie Herseth used that counter service on her web site and decided she knows what she's doing (besides it was also a free service). He selected his old College colors of Gold and Purple to be the counter's colors.
HERSETH IN DEAD HEAT WITH JANKLOW IN U.S. HOUSE RACE
It was reported on CNN's "Inside Politics" by Bob Novak that in the contest for South Dakota's lone seat in the House of Representitives, Stepanie Herseth and Governor Bill Janklow were tied within the 5% margin of error in polls taken inside the state. This could spell bad news for the Republican Govenor as he may have to work and campaign a little harder for this seat. With 98 days left until the election he has his work cut out for him as Democratic candidate Herseth has been fundraising like a winner. She even has a few moderate Republicans endorsing her. Some have speculated that only a skeleton in the closet of Ms. Herseth will prevent her from becoming the first female U.S. House delegate in South Dakota History. The Holabird Advocate and it's Publisher have endorsed Ms. Herseth in her quest for the seat in spite of the fact that Janklow made a state holiday for Mr. Hinkle's grandfather and Stephanie Herseth hasn't even sent a card or even made a collect call on the phone to the Publisher or his grandfather.

GEORGE KENNEDY:GENIUS AT WORK
When Harold and Mary left for their working vacation, George Kennedy was in the middle of his. Several projects were left undone and half done. One of which was Jerry Hinkle's car. For some reason the battery was wearing down. This has been going on for about 2 1/2 weeks. It took George a mere few seconds to determine that the alternator was at fault. It can not be denied that George is, in fact a mechanical genious where Jerry is a mechanical moron. George will be missed when he leaves for home.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
by Hiram Gonagan
Harold and Mary Hinkle have been just as busy as you can get on a trip like this. Harold has discovered a green thumb planting flowers at the Coolum Bible Camp, while Mary washed the dormitory walls. They have done a great deal of work, but they have fun too. They have made time for shopping and watching the surfers on the ocean. They have seen many koalas and kangaroos. Harold and Mary shared a BIG banana split at the pineapple plantation. They have fresh fruit for breakfast every morning. They as well as the other people on this mission trip will be working at the camp until Thursday. Harold will be taking Mary fishing on that day while her sisters, Phyllis and Joan do laundry. While at the bible camp they have been charged $6 to email so Mary has called the Ponderosa once to check on things there, while Joan has called her mother at least once to let her know how things are with them and check on here. It's cheaper than e-mail, and with only an 15 hour time difference separating them, it's more personal. E.E. Hinkle has said of this "If they couldn't afford all it I'd feel sorry for them".
E.E. HINKLE SHOWS OFF
Darrel Hinkle was putting Leroy Scott's German diesel together with a little help from George Kennedy. Leroy had just asked if he got over his big birhday, when out came E. E. Hinkle. walking around in temps reaching 104 degrees at one time. It's just 51 weeks until his next birthday. He'll be 101 and having fun. He just refuses to act his age. We should all do that well.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
by Hiram Gonagan
The working part of Harold and Mary Hinkle's trip is going to kick in shortly, but until then they have been entertained in the most native way.In Montville, a little village that caters to the tourist trade, they were able to take in the sunshine and 70 degree farenheit temps.Along the Sunshine Coast Highway, they were able to drive along into all of the shops there. They lunched outside at a local cafe The scenery is reportedly beautiful despite a month long dry spell. Everything is still green and the weather is beautiful. The Hinkle's host family has a 12 year old daughter going to school in the Luthern mission that they will be working and where they will be going to church just a few short hours from press time. The host took them out to dinner Saturday night their local time.On Sunday evening they will be off to the Coolum Bible camp. The next 3 days will be work days.Reports will be published when they are recieved.

CLYDE "SCOTT" GREGG DROPS DEAD AT HOME
After having coffee yesterday afternoon Holabird resident Clyde Gregg, known as Scott to all of his friends, had decided to take a nap in his bedroom but didn't make it to bed. Mr. Gregg had spent most of the day taking his wife, Marilou, to Aberdeen for radiation treatments. Funeral arrangements are pending at this time and will be published in The Holabird Advocate at the earliest possible time.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
by Hiram Gonagan
Harold and Mary Hinkle are in "The Land Down Under" at long last. They have a computer they can access from their host family's home and will report to The Holabird Advocate when find the time.Their host family welcomed them by taking them to a neighbor's birthday party.Along the way they saw the sights in Brisbane. They ate the traditional Brittish fish and chips at Sutton Beach in Moreton Bay. Friday night saw them at an art show.
The flight was good and on time except for a 2 hour delay in Denver, CO. Conecting flights were made with no problem. Weather is beautiful in Brisbane. It was compared to Miami in winter. Reports may be hampered by the 15 hour time difference between Holabird and Brisbane but you'll read it here first.

FESTIVE Y1C WINDS DOWN
The flood of family and friends that came upon the Ponderosa for Y1C has all but tried up now . There were an estimated 285 guest including 62 reletives from all over the world. All of E.E. Hinkle's children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren were in attendance at one time. among the honored gusts were E.E.'s brother Don Hinkle was there with his wife Larayne, his sons Jauhn and Donnie, daughters-in-law, Jennifer and Erin, grandaughter Jianni, and daughter and son-in-law Theresa and Ivan Berwager. Ellene Farley, E.E.'s niece, came with her husband Russ. Ed Wallis, a nephew of E.E.'s, came with his wife Donna, son Jason, Daughter Laura, and four grandchildren, one of which, Jared wants to come over next year. A special guest at the Ponderosa was E.E.'s 90 years young cousin Ralph Meyers and son Nick.
At the Senior Center in Highmore Cletus M. Spangler, a distant relative that nobody talks about much, made a surprise visit. Also in the surprise category was Marion Maginnis who made a special trip to pay his due respect to his brother-in law E.E. It was at the very warm Senior Center that a short program was presented to and for E.E. among the presentations were a 100 year old bottle of Korean shu chi, Korean art, pieces, and a jar of 100 pennies. July 22nd was also named Emory Hinkle Day by the Govenor of South Dakota. That evening all who were able to went back to the Ponderosa for an arial photograph.
Early Sunday morning there was a severe storm warning for the area. High winds blew, shaking the motor homes and campers parked outside everyone gathered into E.E.'s house and stayed there until after he asked them to get out. After everyone caught up on their sleep they made their way to church, several of them being late. After church they made their way to the Thunderbird Steak House where E.E. was presented with a picture of Himself beside a new John Deere tractor with a prayer enclosed on it. Ellene Farley gave a testimony to the assembled group about the dinner table in Heaven and all the family members waiting for them there. A half inch rain was recieved with greatful hearts all the way around.
The actual birthday for E.E. was Monday he asked for and got ice cream and cake for breakfast. John Zilverberg stopped by for a visit and several calls for E.E. of congratulations were made.Henry Single called on the old boy as well.

Y1C COMING UP FAST
With just 4 days before the big celebration, the Ponderosa is becoming a hub of activity. Last minute preparations are being attended to. Mavis and George Kennedy arrived for a three weeks stay on Monday. Jerry Hinkle took his grandfather, E.E. Hinkle into Higmore to order 10 gallons of ice cream for the big event as well as an assortment of ice cream toppings.
HYDE COUNTY STATES ATTORNEY AXTMANN RETIRES
There was a retirement party for David Axtmann at the Hyde County Courthouse on Monday afternoon. Mr Axtmann has been serving as Hyde County States Attorney for nearly thirty years. He has decided to take up the preisthood in the Cathelic Church. All of us at The Holabird Advocate believe that wherever the future priest ends up, He will give that community a great deal of good service. Among the well wishers was E.E. Hinkle. In fact the old Boy almost stole the show. It was at this gathering that he presented Mr Axtmann with a greeting card made from an old picture of the Courthouse by E.E.'s wife Bergit. Mr Axtmann, Who collects pictures of courthouses, was touched that he was gifted with that particular card by that particular man. Several people wondered if E.E. Hinkle should be out on such a warm day (101 degrees), while others were concerned about his ability to climb the two flights of stairs. He moved slowly but he did make it up and down those stairs. As for the heat he prefers it to the cold as he had to be talked out of wearing a jacket.
PONDEROSA TO CELEBRATE JERRY HINKLE'S BIRTHDAY AS WELL
Against Jerry Hinkle's wishes and better Judgement, His Birthday is going to be obsevered but only as that is the date when the flood of relatives starts. Among the throng will be Don, LaRayne, Jauhn, Jennifer, and Jianni Hinkle; K.C., Marta, and Kyle Ferris; and Russ and Ellene Farley. Known to be arriving Friday will be E.E. Hinkle's 90 year old cousin Ralph Meyers and his son Nick. Several others are expected at any time.
GOOD OLD COUSIN ANNE
by Jerry Hinkle, Special to
The Holabird Advocate
Another birthday has snuck upon me. I was prepared to kind of ignore it, but since I'm supposed to be fighting ignorance, (refer to the top of the page) it's not going to happen. There has been a flood of cards for my Grandad's birthday which is what I wanted and I thank you, the readers, for that. Imagine my surprise when I openned Monday's mail to find a card from my cousin Anne, not for Grandad, but for me. I always send out e-cards to those I feel close to, including Anne. It is humbling to me that anyone would not only buy a card, but spend a whole 37 cents to let me know they were thinking of me. The card even arrived 3 days early, as my birthday is not until Thursday.
Anne has Downs Syndrome, which is suppose to mean that she is slower than supposedly normal people at certain things. Her card gave me a rather timely moment of joy, just when I needed it. As far as I'm concerned Grandad can keep his flood of cards and his honors. He can even have his State holiday. I wouldn't trade that card for any of it. She's so kind and thoughtful. I don't know how she knew what I needed, but I'm glad she did. I hope that each and every one of you, the readers, have a friend or a family member like Anne. I actually wish I could be like more her. It would be a nicer world. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

AUDITORIUM IS OFF LIMITS TO PUBLIC
The Hyde County Memorial Auditorium has had yet another setback in the reconstruction process. While looking for Auditorium custodian, Tom Durfee, on Thursday night Barbara Nemec of Holabird was informed that the structual engineers hired to evaluate the soundness of the nearly 50 year old building have discovered that the building is aging and needs to be redone or we could have a repeat of the previous collapse. There is a tentitive rescheduling of the performance of her play "A Good Land" because of the possible delay this project will cause. The project will take another two weeks at least on top of the floor maintenance of three weeks.
NOT JERRY HINKLE'S WEEK
On top of all the the other troubles he's had, which have been reported in the previous edition of The Holabird Advocate, he's had more. Car trouble had left him to borrow his mother's car to go to a rehersal for "A Good Land", that was cut short because of the problems with the Aud. One of the scenes that were rehersed was his scene. And it was mentioned pretty much unanimously that he has done better. his dresser was a casulty of the bedroom project. It has, as the song says "bit the dust". He still has the drawers from said dresser they are stacked up on top of one another and will be so until other araingments can be made. As if that wasn't enough, it's been reported that his favorite "Oldies Station" on the radio is going from "The hits of the 50s, 60s and 70s" to "The hits of the 80's, 90s and Today". This from a guy who, when he heard of the Pet Shop Boys' reunion tour, he cryed "What've I, what've I, what've I done to deserve this". Let's hope next week gets better.
LET'S GO TO THE VIDEO TAPE
by Buster Brock
By golly, That Angelina Jolie is something else isn't she. Not in "Tomb Raider". After seeing that stinker I believe she owes this reviewer $3. Of course it wasn't all her fault. I remember all the talk about Angelina's-well-her torso and how it was the only reason the fellas see this flick. Well this movie, and her torso, did nothing for me. the movie was boring, and the plot was way too hard to follow. If you see this turkey at the video store or the Stop-n-Rob look at the cover if you must, but walk away. That is, of course, unless you have trouble sleeping at night. Yes, it is that boring. Angelina's fake english accent is tedious to listen to. However, the fellow who played her butler was entertaining. Watch out for him. He's gonna be a star in his own right in the near future.

VOL. I Issue 7E
CHANGING TIMES AT THE PONDEROSA
Change has never come easy for our beloved, courageous, dynamic Publisher. He still refers to Bill Clinton as "the President" from time to time, when he's not paying attention. But in the last few days there's a lot more change then he can stand right know. He'll have more details about this later in this edition. On Tuesday Mary Hinkle was really changing things around bunkhouse at the Ponderosa. She started with the bedroom that she shares with Harold. That was alright, but then the next day she moved on to his bedroom. You'd think she was killing him the way he was carrying on. And it does look like a disaster hit it (but then it always did). The rebuilding is still on going.
AUDITORIUM CLEANUP IS GOING SLOW
At rehersals for "A Good Land" Jerry Hinkle looked at a real disaster area, The Hyde County Memorial Auditorium. Construction of the roof is finished but the east wing of the Aud has at least 3 feet of insulation on the floor. The ceiling in the east wing needs repair. The rest of the ceiling has been repaired already. We won't Need Claire Voyant to predict that the Aud will be ship shape and in apple pie order (whatever that means) by the time the production of "A Good Land" is ready to be performed. When that will be ready is just not known. The performances will be on August 16-17 whether they are ready or not.
JERRY HINKLE FACES LIFE
by Jerry Hinkle, Special to
The Holabird Advocate
Ours, as you know, is not a perfect world. Nobody, no not even I, am perfect. The forced remodeling of my bedroom I can deal with eventually. It is after all "just stuff". I shall have to remember that everytime I look for something and can't find it. I can be glad that at least the house was not consumed by fire or flood (no chance on that last one, eh). The only thing that stays the same is the rule that all things and all people must and do change.
This morning was a real clincher for me as I was surfing the internet and saw a picture and read the words that will change me in ways that I have yet to know. You see, my dear readers, I, your courageous, dynamic Publisher has had his courageous, dynamic heart broken. It appears that while I was not looking, not paying attention, a really big change occurred. A certain young lady, whom I will not name, has married. I bare no ill will to "her" or to the person that she has married. I have chosen not to mention her name only because I don't want to cause her any more embarassment than is neccessary.
I look all around for someone to blame for the set of circumstances that I find myself in, yet the only person i can blame is the man I look in the mirror at while I'm shaving. Perhaps she has read the articles where I spoke so glowingly of Kirsten Dunst, Lisa Kudrow, or even Stephanie Herseth, and decided that I was not as fiercely loyal to "her" as I had let on. Perhaps "she" didn't want to wait for the day that I would be worthy of "her". It's even possible that "she" never wanted to have anything to do with me at alI, in this life, or the next. I hope that the person that "she" got married to makes "her" the happiest young lady in the whole U.S.A. and they have at least 75 years of wedded bliss to look forward to.
And then there's me. How will I go on? I will find a way. I became courageous and dynamic and made several changes in my life because I saw a day in that "she" and I would be able to spend the rest of our lives together. Just as soon as I was worthy of her. As the song says it's all "out the window" now. I will recover from this, of course. It will take time, yet it will happen.
This reminds me of my High School days. I was a Senior. We were reading "Macbeth". A friend of mine told me that I was like Macbeth in that "no man of woman born can destroy you". To which I replied "Yes, but women are a different story". Fact is, I would have rather had Mike Tyson chew off my body parts one by one than to have seen that bit on the internet. But the fact remains that I did. I also wish I could have been better prepared for that news. I wonder if it would have changed a thing had i known about this wedding before the fact instead of after. I doubt it, anyway I can't go back in time, only forward.
And forward I shall go. I hope that you, the reader aren't too upset with me that I have taken up the bulk of this edition of The Holabird Advocate to convey to you this particular part of my life. It will go on, you know, my life that is. Save your pity for those who need it. The timing of this, just 9 days before Y1C, was not ideal. I hope that I'll be in a festive mood by then. For Grandad's sake more than my own. I may never be my courageous, dynamic self ever again. But then who knows. I may come out of this more courageous and dymanic than ever before.

"A GOOD LAND" TO TAKE TO THE STAGE
The production of "A Good Land", the play written and directed by Holabird's own Barbara Nemec has hit qite a few snages in the last 8 months. Rehersals are now planned to resume at 8pm. Monday evening at the Hyde County Memorial Auditorium .The Aud was to be out of commision for 3 weeks when maintenance on the wood floor would take place. Last week, The roof caved in under unknown circumstances. Apparently the stage area was uneffected. "Our actors need to get there blocking down" said director Nemec at rehersal two weeks ago. The latest snags have not damaged the spirit of the cast and crew, in fact it has made them determined to go on with the show.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
by Hiram Gonagan
In my previous column, I reported that Harold and Mary Hinkle of Holabird were going to Dryland Aquatics water park. They were scheduled to have a 2 hour tour that took 3 hours (shades of Gilligan's Island abound). Along with them were Mike and Betty McDonnell; Larry and Bonnie Nickleson; Andrew and Tracy Lennick; and Eric Volek instead of Tom Gravatt as previously reported .It appears the the assemled company may become repeat customers.Dryland Aquatics charged the group a modest $18 each for this outing
DEADWOOD AREA FIRE CONTAINED
On Sunday evening word came that Deadwood's Grizzly Gulch fire that has charred 10,700 acres is finally 100% contained. The fire is still burning but contained.

QUIET 4TH NOISY 5TH ON THE PONDEROSA
The fireworks ban and common sense prevailed on the Fourth of July.July 5th had an impromtu gathering of PETA as pork loin was prepared by Mary Hinkle for the assembled company.Among the guests were Agnes Hahn; Larry, Phyllis, and Brenda Ehlers; Colleen, Brandon, and Jesse Gervais; Darrel, Kristi, Brittany, Shelby, and Justin Hinkle; and Jim Hoffman .Brit showed her city boy cousins the shetland ponies. Then they ran in the sprinkler. She even helped them catch a couple grasshoppers. Harold wished they could have caught more to take home.
REPAIRS BEGIN ON AUDITORIUM ROOF
Highmore Mayor, Mike Newton, annouced plans to repair the roof to the Hyde County Memorial Auditorium. A structual engineer has been located and convict labor has been requested. A time table will be forthcoming. The exact cause is unknown at this time but several stories and theories have been bounced around. When and if an exact cause can be determined it will be reported in The Holabird Advocate.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
by Hiram Gonagan
Larry and Phyllis Ehlers took their respective mothers to Branson Mo and Silver Dollar City. Among the attractions they visited were the Shepard of the Hills Pagent and the Lawrence Welk Theater. The restrooms in the Shoji Tabuchi Theater were memorable to them because of the fireplaces located in there.
Harold and Mary Hinkle are going to the Dryland Aquatics water park in Sparks, Nebraska early tomorrow morning. They will be accompanied by Mike and Betty Mcdonnell; Larry and Bonnie Nickleson; Andrew and Tracy Lennick; and Tom Gravatt. This place is in the back country. In fact, the last few miles of the way are gravel road. They are expected back Sunday evening
Kristi Hinkle took her Husband Darrel to her Lead High School Class of '92 10 year reunion on Friday night in Lead, South Dakota. They will be home Saturday evening. Word from Lead is that the fire in neighboring Deadwood is expected to be 100% contained by tomorrow.

HYDE COUNTY AUDITORIUM ROOF FALLS IN
Production of "A Good Land" is delayed once again as the roof of the Hyde County Memorial Auditorium collapsed on Monday Afternoon. It's not known just when or if the Auditorium will be ready for the play. The director, Holabirds own Barbara Nemec, has taken all of the delays in stride with a spirit that her pioneer foremothers would be proud of. Even though this is a labor of love for Mrs. Nemec the situations she has dealt with would have caused any other person to give up weeks ago.
AASBYS VACATION IN BLACK HILLS
In honor of their 5th anniversary, David and Beth Aasby along with baby Ayden went to the Black Hills of western South Dakota. Aside from the fires and the heat, plus a trip to the emergency room for dehydration, they had fun on their campout. The Aasbys have returned home healthy, happy and refreshed.
DEADWOOD FIRE CONTINUES
The last word from our Deadwood sources is that the fire has burned 6000 acres and counting. The fire is currently 10% contained. Kristi Hinkle's brother Jeremy is still not able to come back home, but has been informed that his house is still standing.

THE HOLABIRD ADVOCATE CELEBRATES 6 MONTHS IN OPERATION
Can you believe it? The Holabird Advocate has been up and run-well OK, slowly crawling for half a year. Bringing Holabird to the world has been an interesting experience. We've taken a lot of chances in the last 6 months. Not all of them paid off. At any rate we all hope the next six months will be a pleasure for you the reader. To that end,we are going to start expanding and adding a travel review from time to time with reporter Hiram Gonagan. Also Buster Brock will be reviewing video tapes(we can't afford to have him review movies in a theater). As always keep the e-mails, cards, and letters coming in to let us know what you think about this great publication.
HOT TIME IN DEADWOOD
Forrest fires in the Black Hills reached Deadwood, South Dakota Saturday night. Among those evacuated were Kristi Hinkle's father, Jan Van Tassel, as well as her brother and sister-in-law Jeremy and Sara Van Tassel. Last Report was that 8 buildings were lost and 4800+ acres were burning. Lead, South Dakota was evacuted south of Main Street yesterday.
PONDEROSA REACHES TRIPLE DIGITS
The last 3 days have reached 104, 107, and 105 respectively with more 3 digit temps expected for today and the week ahead. Watering the gardens have not helped as the dry weather continues with a dew points of 62 and overnight lows of 75. Mary Hinkle's flowerbed is a pot pourri oven these days.
MEMO TO CBS NEWS:ENOUGH WITH THE SPECIAL REPORTS
by Jerry Hinkle,Special to The Holabird Advocate
I don't know who is in charge of the news division at the CBS network. I do know that whoever it is has never babysat a 5 year old that really digs "Dora the Explorer".My Niece's hero Dors was just about to hear the riddle of the Troll to Cross the bridge to "something". I wasn't watching all that close, but just as soon has he started to get the riddle out, Along comes Susan Spencer to tell us that President W is out of surgery and is doing well. This is news? Ms. Spencer if W's life is in jeopardy, that's news. When W is "doing fine", that is not news. At least not news that you'd have to break into the cartoon time of our nations children. My niece can't even say colonoscopy and you thought she needed to know all about it At least back in 1999 when Dan Rather had a special report showing Monica Lewinsky's testimony you waited until the cartoon show was over and I could get her interested in a Bugs bunny video tape. Anyone with half a brain could tell you at CBS that this kind of TV fare is not best on Saturday morning. If only somone at CBS news had half a brain. I could run the news division better. Of course I'm not liberal enough and would probably not get the job because I passed the intelligence test .Luckily my niece, Britt, after she got over the shock managed to just shout out "Rat Finky",a phrase that helps me to know she's upset without using profanity. Sumner Redstone really has to get a 24 hour news network on cable for you guys to play with.Yes, it'll be at the bottom of the ratings, but then you're used to that by now.
