Holabird AdvocateProviding all the news we see fit to print since 2002!Monday, February 18, 2013 Happy President's Day by Jerry Hinkle
If any of you are working today, God Bless You! If not, then perhaps you would like to know why you have the day off! Today is a holiday that started out as an observance of George Washington's birthday. Slowly but surely the Washington mystique has wore off, and he's lumped in with all the other presidents.
There are a lot of truths, half truths and outright lies being told about Washington. I once observed that it is ironic that the nations capital is named after a man who "could not tell a lie". As it happens, the story of him chopping down the cherry tree and confessing the act to his father was a story by a man known as Parson Weems, who claims that the story was told to him by a woman who in turn claimed to be a cousin to the Father of the country. As for the story that he threw a dollar across the river. Um-NO! He didn't do that either. He was first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of America. He remains the only president who was elected unanimously.
As for the rest of the presidents, each of them were just as good as Washington. Some of them were even better. Being a President of the United States is not the easiest of jobs, because when somethings goes wrong, he's the one that everyone blames it on! I try to remember how difficult the job is whenever I criticize him. And regardless who is in the Oval Office, I always keep him in my prayers. If God can see fit to bless his administration, we'd all do well to follow that example.
God be with you and do the best you can!
