Holabird AdvocateProviding all the news we see fit to print since 2002!Tuesday, August 29, 2006 Asleep at the Switch Rounds Grants Stay of Execution by Jerry Hinkle, Special to the Holabird Advocate Governor M. Michael Rounds, and Attorney General Larry Long gave a press conference in Pierre this evening. Both gave long, drawn out, and poorly prepared statements explaining why the Stay of Execution for Elijah Page was necessary. Apparently it had to do with the number of drugs used in the execution process. Furthermore, it appears that South Dakota's law, and the accepted procedure for lethal injection were not in agreement. For this reason, the execution will be delayed until July of 2007. It was reported that Rounds and Long were made aware of this discrepancy a mere two hours before the press conference, even though they had six months to plan the whole thing out. This is proof to me that there needs to be a change in the regime that has had a strangle hold on South Dakota for far too long. When it comes to life and death decisions, it appears we can not count on our State Government Officials. the worst part of this deal is that the decision is not based on right or wrong, but what is "legal" in our great state. This episode has been a wake up call for both sides of this issue. Are we going to stay awake or go back to sleep on this issue?
