Holabird AdvocateProviding all the news we see fit to print since 2002!Friday, February 04, 2005 VOL. IV Issue 2C Radio Depot Plugs Holabird Advocate As the buzz from the South Dakota blog site cools, a radio station from Brookings heats things up. It was 18 minutes well spent, and if the Arbitron ratings are favorable, Jerry Hinkle may get on the air again. Grant Peterson, from Depot Radio's "Afternoon Smorgasbord", quizzed the Publisher on some rather mundane issues such as the Newsblog's origin, life in Holabird, and the art of Lucinda Zilverberg. He also had some spicy questions about possible salacious activity at the old Great Plains Motel and the possibility (or lack thereof) of exotic dancing in Highmore. As enjoyable as the experience was, Jerry was hoping that Bernie Hunhoff could have joined them. As it happens, Depot Radio's signal is weak, but audible from the Ponderosa. In fact, Jerry heard part of the show on the digital radio in his bedroom. Statehouse Accepts Marriage Proposal A measure that would allow South Dakota voters to decide if the state constitution should include a ban on gay marriages has hit the halfway mark in the Legislature. The House passed the proposal on a vote of 55-to-14. Supporters argued that the traditional definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman is under legal attack in several states. They say South Dakota should lock that definition into the state constitution in order to make it more difficult to challenge in court. A state law passed by the Legislature has defined traditional marriage since 1996, but the constitution can only be changed by voters. Opponents of the proposed constitutional amendment argued that it is discriminatory, unnecessary and may have repercussions that cannot possibly be contemplated. The measure will be taken up later by the state Senate. If approved there, it will be on the general election ballot next year. Reverend Al Sharpton Joins KFC Boycott In a new TV and radio campaign, the Rev. Al Sharpton has joined PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in calling for a ban of fast-food chain KFC. He is urging the black community to join the PETA boycott of the fried chicken franchise, the animal protection group announced Thursday. Jerry Hinkle, founder of PITA (People Ingesting Tasty Animals) is encouraging members of the carnivorous community to keep on eating tasty animals until they are no longer tasty. PITA is open to everyone regardless of race, creed, or color. As he said in a statement Friday, "What the Heck? They're already dead! YUM!"
