VOL. I Issue 10I
EMILY'S LIST FEATURE'S HERSETH AD
Because of recent reports of EMILY's list and it's views the Holabird Advocate has done some investigating. Thus far we have found that EMILY stands for Early Money Is Like Yeast (it helps the dough rise). They seem to favor pro choice women in the Democratic party. We have yet to read what this group has to say about the partial birth abortion procedure, we are still looking. Herseth for Congress has paid for and authorized the following statement that is on the EMILY's List web site emilyslist.org. We at the Holabird Advocate are running it without payment, or for that matter, authorization. This ad has been in place since August :
Dynamic young leader. Stephanie Herseth swept through a four-way Democratic primary; in November, she can recapture the House seat left open by Republican Rep. John Thune's run for the Senate. She is a distinguished lawyer who has taught at Georgetown University. Coming from a farm family, Stephanie Herseth understands the needs of South Dakota's rural economy.
Old war-horse in a young leader's race. Republicans have nominated the current term-limited governor, Bill Janklow, who has run rough-shod over South Dakota politics for sixteen years. South Dakotans like to elect dynamic young leaders - Tom Daschle was just 30 when he won this same House seat - and Stephanie Herseth fits the bill. One newspaper observed: "Basically, the governor is running against Katie Couric's little sister who also happens to be a member of Mensa." Building a stand-out campaign. Stephanie Herseth has the political savvy and the personal appeal to bring this seat back to the Democratic side. But the national Republican Party longs to embarrass Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle by sweeping the House and Senate seats in his home state this year. So Bill Janklow will be backed by massive Republican resources.
NCQ MONITOR CHANGES RATING
The Herseth campaign's recent momentum and other considerations has caused the NCQ Monitor to change their rating of the U.S. House race from "Leans Republican" to "No Clear Favorite". As they put it "Herseth shows Heft against Janklow". The race was rated "Strongly Republican" before the Herseth campaign got started.
ANNE HANSEN TURNS THE BIG 2-3
On Sunday several friends, family members and a couple total strangers celebrated Anne Hansen's 23rd birthday with a dinner of turkey, pork, hash brown potatoes and a birthday cake that she was forced to share with cousin, Tracy Lennick, whose birthday is the 23rd. Anne wasn't the center of attention as much of the talk was about the pheasant hunt, skunk attacks, the D.C. sniper, and the impending war with Iraq.
Anne is working on a book about her travels in South Dakota. It could be interesting when it is finished. She has said that even though she has been to a lot of places across the country and around the world, she likes South Dakota best.
HUNTERS MOVE ON TO WYOMING
Drs. George and Scott Wilson DDS of Forrest city, IA have had enough South Dakota pheasant hunting. They are moving on to the Jackson Hole Wyoming area for elk hunting. They did leave their dogs for anyone who has use of them. Better make it quick though as Georges wife Liz will be taking them back home sometime around tomorrow morning
