Holabird AdvocateProviding all the news we see fit to print since 2002!Saturday, October 05, 2002 VOL. I Issue 10C KINDERGARTEN GOES "DOWN UNDER" In her last act as Kindergarten VIP, Brittany Hinkle had her grandmother Mary Hinkle show the members of her class the highlights of her trip. Mary showed them koalas, kangaroos, and kookaburas. She came to class dressed as ol' Dundee too (or as close as she could come to it). She even got the kids to try vegamite on a Ritz cracker. Believe it or not, freinds and neighbors, she even had a couple of kids that asked for seconds on that unit. They and everyone else got a choco chip cookie for being such good sports. WHAT'S A VEGETARIAN TO DO by Jerry Hinkle,Special to the Holabird Advocate Geneticly modified organisms (GMO) are hardly new to the food and agriculture scene. Vegetarians, and some Jews were not happy when Taco Bell resturants were using GMO tomatoes that had pork genes in them a few years back. Now bio-technology (BT) corn has been found to have the pork gene in it as well. Now, I am not a Vegetarian, or a Jew and I've never claimed to be. But, as a right thinking American, I believe that if you are a veggie you have a certain right to food free of animal genetic material. If you are of the Jewish persuasion you have the right to a kosher taco. Looks like those of you that shop for tomatoes, corn, and whatever else is out there may have to ask "Are the vegetables pork free today?". When I was a young naive country boy in a one-room rural school my teacher told me that all our food came from a farm. "Even Twinkies?", I asked. I was skeptical at first, but I believed. Now I'm not too sure about that. Now, I think it all comes from a lab somewhere could it be that the corn we grow here on the Ponderosa belong not in a corn crib, but a hog house? Kind of makes you wonder doesn't it?
