VOL. I Issue 9K
ANOTHER DELAY FOR "A GOOD LAND"
Now that the Auditorium is open to the public once again the public seems very closed to rehersing the Barbara Nemec play "A Good Land". At least two roles are being recast and rehersals have been delayed until sometime in November. It seems that children and adults alike are busy with work, school and other activities. It is hoped that this delay will be the last. The thinking behind it is that there will be about a month and a half between football and boys' basketball seasons as well as volleyball and girls' basketball seasons. All this was decided at a meeting of the cast and crew last night at the Auditorium in Highmore. A meeting that was to be a rehersal but several people could not make it to the rehersal for reasons stated previously in this article. The core group of this production are hopeful that there will be a performance someday.
CLAIRE VOYANT PROVED WRONG
Despite objections from Claire Voyant to the contrary, our Publisher Jerry Hinkle has decided that her prediction concerning her predition that "Survivor" would seperate the male and females players was wrong. He is basing this from hearsay evidence from Harold and Mary Hinkle since he didn't see the show. Anyone who disagrees with this decision is advised to appeal to the Holabird Advocate. Maybe you saw something that Harold and Mary did not.
HERSETH JANGLES JANKLOW'S
SOUTH DAKOTA HOUSE RACE
According to Mary Care Jalonick of the CQ MONITOR NEWS that in an era of widespread voter apathy acrosss the country in South Dakota polictical candidates can take on a celebraty status. A status that Stephanie Herseth knows well. Her own hometown of Houghton, South Dakota had "Stephanie Herseth Day", a celebration of her underdog bid against term limited-Govenor William J Janklow. Most of the towns 50 residents showed for this occasion. At a Labor Day event earlier this month Ms. Herseth was one of many candidates that found themselves the center of attention. Despite all this she has a tough campaign ahead of her. Her family name is Familiar in South Dakota, having a grandfather, Ralph E. Herseth, who was Govenor from 1959-61 (a full term back then)
Janklow is a 64 year-oldfour term Govenor serving from 1979-1987 and again from 1995 to this day. He is tested and popular. He has also been dealing with several disasters this past year such as tornadoes and forest fires. Janklow is also a believer in the promacy of national and homeland security.
Janklow also has the benefit of a Republican electorate. The same people that voted 60% for George W. Bush in 2000. Republicans have held the Govenor's office for the last 24 years with Janklow being in it for 16 of those years. Still, South Dakota has two U.S. Senators, Tim Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Tom Dashcle.
Herseth's strong campaign is boosting a stage of contention. A televison poll has her leading Janklow 44% to 41%. She has used her youthful energy tostate her main ussue of how to improve the states economy and keep young people in South Dakota. Her message resonates with older voters as well as the younger ones
Herseth has been spending the summer scouring for votes while Janklow has been more low key. So much so that some have wondered if his heart is in his campaign. Janklow's camp replies that Herseth can campaign more because she doesn't have a job to do, whereas Janklow has been dealing with tornadoes, forest fires, and mudslides.
CQ MONIOR has changed this campaign rating from "Republican Favored" to "Leaning Republican"
The Holabird Advocate and it's Publisher have Endorsed Ms. Herseth's campaign and still do.
