COURT RULING ON THE PLEDGE IGNITES UPROAR
reprinted from USA TODAY reporter Martin Kasindorf
A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that saying the Pledge of Alleigence in public schools is unconstitutional because the "under God" portion added by Congress in 1954 improperly endorses religion.
The 2-1 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals in California stunned politicians and outraged religious groups.
President Bush called it "ridiculous".The U.S. Senate voted 99-0 on a resolution condemning the ruling.Members of the House of Representatives gathered on the steps of the Capitol to recite the Pledge.
"This is the worst kind of political correctness run amok."Sen.Kit Bond(R-Mo.)said
The ruling covers nine western states. It would take effect only if all appeals failed.
The ruling was bases on a lawsuit filed by Micheal Newdow,a Sacremento doctor and atheiest He argued that the teacher-led pledge in his daugther's second-grade class violated the First Amendment provision that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion".
SCHOLARS EXPECT PLEDGE RULING REVERSAL
by David Kravets,of the Associated press
A federal appeals court panel drew outrage from across the political spectrum by ruling that it is unconstitutional for cladssrooms to to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, but the decision may not last for long
Some legal scholars say the ruling likely be overturned by the U.S Supreme Court or reversed by the full 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
CALIFORNIA DREAMING ON SUCH A SUMMERS DAY
by Jerry Hinkle,Special to The Holabird Advocate
Yes,I know,Most of this edition was reprinted from outside sources, but this column is all me. I, your courageous, dynamic publisher do have a thing or two of my own to say about this issue.Firstly, you can't be too suprised that this turn of events happenned in ultra liberal California (San Francisco no less). It has been a long time in coming.Yet both liberal and conservative alike find the ruling equally hard to swallow. Prayer in school is gone, as is prayer at graduation ceremonies. The Pledge is the only mention of God heard in school that isn't used as profanity, which I guess is alright for the hippies in The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.I am not shocked at all that this happened.Neither am I shocked at the backlash that the ruling created. As for "Separation of Church and State", anybody that can show me where in the Constitution that is,please do do.As far as the 1st Amendment issue goes,I believe that atheism is a religion. This ruling, which will be overturned, I'm sure, would violate the 1st Amendment because it puts the the atheist religions over non-atheist religions.
This latest assult on our religious freedoms by the liberals gave me a sense of irony. The words "under God" were added in 1954 because of the fear of the communist menace, and it would be a shame if we, as a nation, gave into the communist menace now. And so now here are two things I'd like to ask of you, the reader. If you do believe in any God, god, or Gods, whether it be Jehovah, Yahweh, Elohim, Jesus, Allah, Vishnu, Buddha, Zeus, The Force, or any other higher power out there and you gather at a place of worship that displays the American flag. Request that your member of clergy begin worship services by leading the faithful in the Pledge. Then go to the service yourself and say these wonderful words with pride : I Pledge Allegiance, to the Flag, Of The United States of America. And to the republic for which it stands. One Nation, under God, with Liberty and Justice for all.Thank you in advance.

GROUND SOAKS UP RECENT RAINS
Despite recieving nearly an inch of rain over the last week, the drought continues on the Ponderosa and the rest of the region.Darrel Hinkle is planning to have a water line built. The dams and dugouts are so dry that there isn't even a mud bottum left in there. Some of the area ranchers are building temporary water lines hoping to put off selling cattle in a flooded market place.
PROGRESS REPORT FOR "OPERATION: GO POSTAL"
The progress of "Operation:Go Postal" is as follows:().Inside those brackets is the amount of progress made one week after launching this project. Kind of almost looks like a zero.Well, I guess that means zero progress was made.
BIG SALE AT KRISTI'S GREENHOUSE
Everything at Kristi's Greenhouse is half off. If you are able to do any gardening and are in need of plants, better get down there quick, You don't need to be Claire Voyant to predict that this sale won't last long.
ICE CREAM ORDERED FOR Y1C
A very hot and possibly hungry E.E."The Good Humor Man" Hinkle has ordered 10 gallons of vanilla ice cream for the Y1C celebration. This is on top of the ice cream on hand already. Will they even need cake? E.E also bought two 24 oz.bottles of choco sauce.Strawberries are being watered in the garden as of now.If you're coming over for Y1C, better bring a spoon, and an appetite.

DARREL HINKLE HAS LUNCH WITH TOM DASCHLE
Darrel Hinkle was one of the select few who were chosen to have lunch with Senator Tom Daschle at the Outpost in Highmore. The purpose of this lunch was to talk about the drought. The KSFY Dakota First News crew came to cover the event. We may see Darrel on TV.The event was coordinated by Mary Jo Nemec of Holabird.Neither she nor her husband, Nicholas, were present at the event. It has long been a policy of the Senator's to visit all of the counties in South Dakota at least once a year.
"OPERATION : GO POSTAL" HITS A SNAG

BURNING BAN CONTINUES AFTER RECENT RAINS
It rained again in Hyde County early this morning.Highmore reported 2 inches.Barbara Nemec reported 1 and a half inches. Darrel Hinkle reported 1.2 inches while the Ponderosa recieved exactly .55 of an inch. In spite of the ban on open fires is still in effect. It is expected for the water currently standing to dry up and disappear in a couple days time.
"A GOOD LAND" TO RESUME PRODUCTION TONIGHT
In a statement this morning Barbara Nemec declared "We're going to put this play together tonight". The cast will be meeting in Highmore at the Heartland State Bank to that end tonight at 8pm.
Brittany Kerr who was to play one of the younger character is home from the hospital and doing well. She is wheelchair bound and expected to be so for at least the rest of the summer.
HAROLD AND MARY HINKLE ARE ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Doug Hinkle of Pierre has asked his parents to come over to his house this weekend to help remodel a couple of the bedrooms. They will find time tonight and tomorrow morning to take in a few rummage sales with Roger and Linda Wurts, who will be camping near Pierre this weekend. Harold and Mary were invited to go along, but they are camping too far from the rest room for Harold's comfort.

VOL. I Issue 6F
LET THERE BE RAIN
The biggest rain in several months happenned at the Ponderosa on yesterday morning. Darrel Hinkle had decided to move his cattle to another pasture on the other side of the Holabird Grade. The rain made him change his mind.Harold, convinced that the rain would be over in 15 minutes time, made him change it back.Well,it rained, and it rained, and it rained for most of the morning. It was a nice gentle and welcome rain. The rain gauge at the Ponderosa measured .18 of an inch at noon when they returned. Not exactly a flood, but it was great that there was any to begin with.
KENNEDYS LEAVE IN A HURRY
It was a quick trip for George and Mavis Kennedy, who left the Ponderosa on Sunday morning after just arriving Friday evening.Nobody knows what the big hurry was,but they did get a lot done while here. All of us at The Holabird Advocate hope they can stick it out for the full 3 weeks next month.
Y1C PLANS MADE,PROGRAM TO BE PRESENTED
Final plans and preparations have be set for Y1C.E.E."Big Spender"Hinkle wants to order 6 pails of ice cream right by itself. There is an estimate attendance of 300 people for this event.Time will tell if that number holds up,but that is what they are planning for.The relatives alone account for about half of that number.
Food was brought up as some people were concerned about breakfast.Jerry Hinkle's idea of a really big kettle of oatmeal was all but ignored, but a couple of different breakfast casserole recipes were discussed.Dinner on Saturday will be catered at the Senior Center at noon.Dinner on Sunday will be Buffet at Bob's Thunderbird in Highmore after Church.
During the Y1C celebration,at about 3pm there will be a short program.Harold asked if he had to give a speech and was relieved to hear he didn't,but was not happy that Jerry was going to give a speech. Also possible is a vocal selection by Tamera Peterson, which has not been confirmed at this time.Anyone who wishes to do anything for the program can contact The Holabird Advocate at captain11xxi@hotmail.com or by mail at Box 41 Holabird,S.D. 57540.
THE HOLABIRD ADVOCATE LAUNCHES"OPERATION:GO POSTAL"
All of us at The Holabird Advocate have noticed the look of disappointment on E.E. Hinkle's face every time the mailman comes and he doesn't get any mail at all."Not even a bill?",he asks."Not even",comes the reply. So to that end we at The Holabird Advocate ask you the reader to send E.E. Hinkle a card or a letter(no bills please). Yes, we understand that 34 cents is a lot to spend on anyone,so we have come up with a little extra incentive. The reader who writes from the farthest distance within the United States by July 22nd will get (his/her) name published in The Holabird Advocate. Readers outside the U.S. will get their country mentioned in The Holabird Advocate . So,there it is.Operation: Go Postal. So send those cards and letters to E.E. Hinkle Box 41 Holabird S.D. 57540 and keep it coming.

WHO LET THE BULL OUT-MOO MOO MOO MOO MOO
It was earlier Wednesday morning, about 1-1:30am,when Jerry Hinkle was awakened by "something" while he was staying with his grandfather E.E. Hinkle. He felt as if there was"a disturbance in 'The Force' " and went outside to see what was going on.At that point he heard something going on,but couldn't see what it was. After going into his bedroom, picking up his 1,000,000 candle power lantern and going back out he discovered one of the charlois bulls in the backyard trying to get a drink from the sprinkler that was watering the yard.It seems he somehow got out because of thirst. Why the other bulls hadn't followed him nobody knows,as the bulls water tank was shut down and had been all day.It is also unknown how the bull got out.that bull sure didn't do that new patch of grass Mary planted any good.We hope this teaches them a lesson out there on the Ponderosa. It sure is dry all over
DRY WEATHER FORCES A BURNING BAN IN HYDE COUNTY
Hyde County Ordinance 2000-001 has declared a ban on open fires until further notice. It is so dry in Hyde county that the visiting Mavis Kennedy has even suggested that she and George leave their car outside to attract rain.People have washed cars and left their windows open.No luck yet. There will definatly be no fireworks display at Y1C.
MORE DELAYS IN "A GOOD LAND" PRODUCTION
Production for "A Good Land" has has a few more setback. One of the singing roles in the play had fallen through and the part was offered to Mary Hinkle. She turned it down for reasons that are obvious. The director, Barbara Nemec countered by telling her she didn't have to sing good, just loud.Still, Mary declined as she is content to leave the stage behind even though she once sang with The Platters in Branson,Mo.Perhaps once was enough.

MARY HINKLE IN BRANDING ACCIDENT
While branding calves on Monday,Mary Hinkle slipped and fell onto the loading chute, cutting open her face.Harold rushed her to the Highmore Clinic. He arranged for her mother,Agnes Hahn to watch over her so he could get back to the branding.Darrel arranged for Ben Nemec to help while they were gone. Mary's injuries were beyond what could be done at the clinic,so Agnes took her to Pierre.Mary recieved 6 stitches and was told not to go out into the dust for 48-72 hours. She is doing fine.
Y1C ORGANIZING TO BEGIN THIS WEEKEND
Mavis Kennedy and Joyce Ferris are coming to the Ponderosa to help organize the Y1C celebration for Their father,E.E. Hinkle. There is room available at the Ponderosa for just about anyone as most people are planning on bringing a camper or renting a motel room.Harold Hinkle says that the radiator hose problem in his motor home will not effect it's sleep quality.
NEMEC RECIEVES WORD OF DEATH
Marlene Nemec, formerly of Holabird recieved word of the death of her grandson,Chris Atkins,22,of Watertown. He was killed in a motorcycle accident on Sunday. All of us at The Holabird Advocate extend our sympathy to her and the rest of the family at this time.Marlene took her family on a trip to Jamaica last week, getting back last Thursday. When chris thanked her he said that he would remember this trip for the rest of his life. How sad it is that the rest of his life was just 3 days.
FBI TO MONITOR WEBSITES
It has come to our attention that the FBI is going to monitor websites in order to look for possible terrorism. We welcome any and all FBI agents to read The Holabird Advocate. We need all the readers we can get. We'd also like to tell those G-men that we think they're doing a great job and if we see anything that even resembles terrorist activity we'll print it right here so you can read all about it.Also if there's anything we can do as private citizens please let us know because we LOVE America. Our Publisher would like to also like to help with any dangerous undercover work you may have.he's really good at playing dumb.Ask his father,he'll tell you.
POLITICS IN SOUTH DAKOTA GETS NASTY-AGAIN
by Jerry Hinkle,Special to The Holabird Advocate
Once again the fighting has started in the Senate race.An environmental group that just happens to support the incumbant, Tim Johnson, has a TV spot that accuses his opponent of increasing the amount of arsenic in drinking water.Thune's people fired back that Johnson should be told to "stop the attacks". This is not fair to the Senator as he has no power over this group, just as Thune had no power to stop the attacks on Daschle earlier this year.As for the arsenic in the drinking water,Thune merely voted to drop the standards to a realisic level.Had he not done so,and had it not passed,we would have been beset with all kinds of federal inspectors shutting down wells on private property. All of us at the Holabird Advocate say,if your water has too much arsenic for you, get a filter and do something for yourself instead of depending on the goverenment to do it for you.Otherwise, shut up and drink your arsenic.

MARION MAGINNIS MAKES Y1C PLANS
It was discovered this past week that Marion Maginnis, brother to Bergit Hinkle may come to the Y1C celebration if he can find a flight. If he does make it out here it will be only the fourth visit in 30 years. Not much else is known about his plans, but when they are finalized The Holabird Advocate will be on the story.
BRANDING DONE AMONG THE BLOWING DUST
Darrel Hinkle had his new heifers and his calves branded today.Branding is not usually done this early in the year, but his banker insisted it be done as soon as possible. So the old Mill Iron H brand was fixed to identify cattle should the be stolen by rustlers. You in the big city may be surprised at the amount of cattle that disappears without a trace. It was a very windy day and the dry weather means that dust blew in the eyes ears and mouth of just about all those present. After a quick shower Mary Hinkle to her father-in law to the cemetary to pick up the flower arrangements left there last month.
WHAT DO YOU KNOW,I'M A KENNEDY COUSIN
by Jerry Hinkle,Special to The Holabird Advocate
The media is all abuzz with the Micheal Skakel trial and now the conviction of a "Kennedy Cousin".Not a good week for him I guess.I'm getting quite tired of all this "Kennedy Cousin" garbage. It was bad enough when William Smith(who besides having the middle name Kennedy really had some Kennedy blood) had a trial. Then there was Micheal Kennedy's trial in the news.I said to myself that Mr. Skakel is no more a Kennedy cousin than I am.Then I picked up on an amazing parrelel between Mr. Skakel and myself. His father's sister married a Kennedy, and so did mine.Fortunatly the simulation ends there as none of my neighbors have been found murdered by my fathers golf club. But, If it does ever happen,I know just who'll get the blame.

TENT SERVICE COMES TO HOLABIRD
The Cathelic parishes of St. John in Harrold and St. Mary in Highmore conducted a Tent Service of the Mass at 3 o'clock on last Sunday Afternoon. The purpose of this mass was to pray for the farmers of the area. There has been a long dry spell that if left this way could result in a drought. Our Publisher was unable to come because 3 o'clock is his grandfather's "Boost time" and he wanted to make sure, old E.E. didn't forget.
NO PUMPKINS THIS YEAR AT THE PONDEROSA
Because of the dry weather it was decided by Harold hinkle that Jerry not plant pumpkins this year.Harold says that it's time for Jerry to rotate his crop.if that's anything like spinning your wheels, Jerry is already doing that.Harold and his Grandaughter Britt planted sweet corn where the pumkins were last year.
THE HOLABIRD ADVOCATE BACKS A WINNER
STEPHANIE HERSETH IS THE NOMINEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stephanie Herseth of Aberdeen is the Democratic party's candidate for it's lone seat in the U.S. House of Representitives.Herseth recieved about 59% of the vote the runner up was Rick Weiland with a mere 32%.Ms. Herseth will face current Govenor,Bill Jankow, who won his party's nomination with 55% of the vote.In His acceptance speech, Janklow said,"I've known Stephanie since she was 3 or 4 years old, and have watched her grow up into the fine lady she's become.I look forward to this campaign".
REPUBLICAN ROUNDS NOMINATED GOVENOR
In an election night surprise that not even The Holabird Advocate's psychic Claire Voyant could have seen coming,Mike Rounds of Pierre was given the Repulican nod for Govenor. The leader in the 3 way race recieved 45%(he only needed 35% to avoid a run-off)to the runner up Mark "Room at the Table" Barnett who had 29% of the vote. It looks like there was no room at the table for Barnett and 3rd placer Steve "Wiggle Wiggle" Kirby with 26%.Rounds claimed that his"issues" and "nice-guy" image won him the nomination, but others believe that it was the fact that the other 2 candidates negative campaigning simply did them in.Rounds, who had a shoestring budget, did little campaigning and stayed out of the Kirby-Barnett mudfest.Kirby, a former Lt. Govenor spent $2million of his own money.Money may talk in politics, but in this case, the whisperer won.
Rounds faces Democrat Jim Abbott in the November election.Abbott won his party's nomination with two-thirds of the votes cast.Abbott had been accused of being a Republican in Demorat clothing because of several Republican contributions to his campaign. This bi-partisan support could make for an interesting election result in November, but a boring campaign as none of the mudslinging is expected to continue.
SOCIETY:AYDEN AASBY ADOPTION
David and Beth Aasby will be celebrating the completion of the adoption of their Daughter, Ayden on the 8th of June. The celebration is by invitation only. We at The Holabird Advocate wish to offer our congratulations to the family.

THE HOLABIRD ADVOCATE BEGINS SIXTH MONTH
It was on New Years Day when Jerry Hinkle, our courageous, dynamic Publisher put out the first edition of The Holabird Advocate.Since that great day we have answered the question that is on nobody's mind "What's happenning in Holabird?".The reason nobody asks that question is because everyone knows the answer already. The answer of course is "Not much".Still all of us at The Holabird Advocate thank you,the reader for reading this, the fruit of our humble efforts. We hope that you come away from your reading experience thinking of Holabird as your hometown.A lot of people, believe it or not, enjoy the editorial portion of the newspaper. It is wonderful to know that the sagacious opinions of our Publisher are so well recieved.Let's keep it going for as long as possible.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Harold and Mary Hinkle went to Farm Island in Pierre to take advantage of the hospitality of Roger and Linda Wurts, freinds of theirs for years. They were unable to use there own RV because of radiator problems, but were glad to have a chance to test the Wurts's camper against the elements. It has been up in the 90s for the last 3 days.We all hope that at least Roger and Linda's air conditioner works. They may have need of it.
